Advocate; started political career as Member of Socialist Party and associated with Praja Socialist Party, Samyukta Socialist Party, Bhartiya Lok Dal, Janata Party, Lok Dal, Lok Dal (A), Janata Dal Janata Dal (S) and several social, cultural and literary organisations; took part in various movements and jailed for more than a dozen times; detained during Emergency under MISA/DIR in June, 1975 for 19 months in Lucknow Jail; led a black flag demonstration as Mayor of Allahabad in February, 1973; violated prohibitory orders in Lucknow and arrested in 1974, also arrested in Delhi on April 9, 1984, supporting demand for early solution of Punjab problem; Mayor, Allahabad Corporation, 1972-73; was General Secretary, Lok Dal, Janata Party, Lok Dal (A), Janata Dal and Janata Dal (S); was Treasurer, U.P. Lok Dal; presently President, U.P.
