Active in social service and trade unions; was arrested in August, 1942 "Quit India Movement" while studying in matriculation; freedom fighter, badly injured in lathi charge in Darbhanga jail, 1943 and had to leave India and stay in Nepal during Quit India Movement; actively helped in opening of, (i) Giridih Women's College, (ii) Baniadih High School, (iii) Bishweshar Secondary School and Inter College in Vill. Nahar and (iv) Natya Parishad at Nahar etc.; connected with (i) A.N. Sinha and L.N. Mishra Institute of Research, Patna and (ii) Jagjivan Ram Institute of Parliamentary Work, Patna; President, (i) Distt. Harijan Sewak Sangh, 1977--80 and (ii) AITUC, for two terms; elected Chairman, Coal Commission of Miners International, 1964; Chairman, Library Committee of Bihar Assembly; Founder General Secretary, Kedar Das Institute of Labour and Social Sciences, Bihar; Secretary, C.P.I. since 1989; Leader, CPI Group in Bihar Assembly for 10 years and Deputy Leader for two years; was Member, (i) Bihar Legislative Assembly Committee on Public Undertakings and (ii) Anti-corruption Committee; Member, (i) National Council, C.P.I., since 1964, (ii) Alternate Member of the Executive Committee of World Federation of Trade Unions, (iii) Bihar State Sectt. C.P.I., (iv) Bihar Legislative Assembly for three terms, (v) Parliamentary Committee on Public Accounts, 1984--85, (vi) Committee on Government Assurances, Rajya Sabha, 1986-87, (vii) SC/ST Welfare Committee for two terms and (viii) Committee on Commerce; attended I.L.O. Convention on Mines; elected to the Rajya Sabha in April, 1984 and re-elected in April, 1990.
Travels abroad: U.S.S.R., Hungary, Bulgaria, Czechoslovakia, G.D.R., U.K., France, Italy, Switzerland, Romania, China, Cuba and Nepal.
Publications: Various Trade Union Booklets and a Novel based on reports on Dhorhi Mines Accident; Novels in Maithili, one Novel `Kala', published by Maithili Academy, `Samajwad Ka Navikaran', a collection of essays in Hindi; regular contributor to Hindi Dailies like Hindustan and Jan- Shakti and periodicals like New Age, Mukti Sangharsh, Mithila Mihir, Maithili Academy Journal, Aryavarta and Indian Nation; Editor of Hindi "AITUC Samvad".
