JOSHI, DR. MURLI MANOHAR:


M.Sc. (Physics), D. Phil; B.J.P. (Uttar Pradesh); son of late Shri Man Mohan Joshi and late Shrimati Chandrawati Joshi; born : at Delhi, January 5, 1934; married to : Shrimati Tarla Joshi, December 13, 1966; 2 daughter

Teacher; Specialisation in Spectroscopy and supervised the research work of about a dozen students for the award of D. Phil. and D. Sc.; Professor of Physics in Allahabad University till January, 1994, retired as Head of the Physics Department; delivered lectures on scientific subjects in several Symposia and Conferences; joined (i) R.S.S. in 1944, (ii) Akhil Bhartiya Vidyarthi Parishad in 1949 and (iii) Bhartiya Jansangh in 1957; arrested in 1948 for offering Satyagrah for removing ban on R.S.S. and later participated in several Jansangh Movements and jailed several times; was detained in MISA during Emergency, 26th June, 1975 to March, 1977; was President, (i) All India Bharatiya Janata Party from Ist February, 1991 to June, 1993 and (ii) University Teachers' Association, Allahabad, 1987-- 90; was General Secretary, (i) Bharatiya Janata Party for four years prior to assuming the Presidentship of the Party, (ii) erstwhile Janata Party in Parliament, 1977--79, (iii) University Teachers' Association, Allahabad, 1971--73 and (iv) Uttar Pradesh Branch of Akhil Bhartiya Vidyarthi Parishad and later on as All India General Secretary between 1949 and 1956; was Secretary and Vice-President of Uttar Pradesh Jansangh in 1 77 prior to its merger in Janata Party; was Organising Secretary of Bhartiya Jansangh, Allahabad, 1957; was in-charge of Youth Wing of Jansangh, known as Yuva Jansangh; was Treasurer of Bharatiya Janata Party, 1981--83; established, (i) Vaichariki (group of thinkers), an inter-disciplinary academic group, Allahabad, (ii) Gyan Kalyan Charitable Trust and (iii) Uttaranchal Vikas Committee; Life Member, Allahabad Education Society; was Member, (i) Committees on courses in several universities, (ii) High Power Committee on Education in Uttar Pradesh, 1968, (iii) Governing Council of Indian Institute of Science, Bangalore, 1977--79, (iv) Uttar Pradesh Committee on Science and Technology (Physics Branch), 1977--79 and (v) Sixth Lok Sabha, 1977; Member, (i) Committee on Science and Technology, Environment and Forests and (ii) Committee on Public Undertakings; elected to the Rajya Sabha in July, 1992.

Clubs: India International Centre.

Travels abroad: U.K., U.S.A., Germany, Italy, Yugoslavia, Bulgaria, Czechoslovakia, USSR, China, Japan and several other countries.

Publications: Published two books in Hindi, (i) Vikalp (The alternative), (ii) Pragya Pravah (The Continuing Wisdom), besides nearly 100 research papers in scientific journals.
