M.A.; (Nominated); son of Shri Amir Chand and late Shrimati Dropti Devi; born : at Hafizabad (now in Pakistan), September 25, 1927; educated at Govt. Schools and Colleges in Punjab and Delhi; married to : Shrimati Uma Jagmohan, February 16, 1957; 1 son and 1 daughter
Retired from Government service; worked for the improvement of slum clearance in Delhi under Delhi Master Plan; awarded, (i) Padma Shri in 1971, (ii) Padma Bhushan in 1977 and (iii) Australian Cultural Award in 1975; attended U.N. Conference on Habitat at Vancouver in 1976; was Lt. Governor, Delhi, 1980-81, 1982 4 and (ii) Goa, Daman and Diu, 1981-82; Governor of Jammu and Kashmir, 1984 89 and again for few months in 1990; Member, (i) Committee of Privileges, Rajya Sabha and (ii) Committee on Urban and Rural Development; nominated to the Rajya Sabha in May, 1990.
Clubs: Member, Indian Council of World Affairs and Life Member, India International Centre.
Travels abroad: Around the World in 1964 69 on Ford Foundation and I.I.P.A. Fellowship.
Accomplishment in arts and science: Literary works and contribution to high level seminars.
Publications: (i) Rebuilding Shahjahanabad, walled city of Delhi, (ii) Island of Truth, (iii) The Challenge of our cities and (iv) My Frozen Turbulence in Kashmir which has run into several editions and translated in eleven regional languages.
Special interest: Literary, social and cultural work.
Favourite pastime and recreation: Reading and writing books and undertaking reform works.
