M.A., B.L.; D.M.K. (Tamil Nadu); son of Shri N.S. Ramiah and Shrimati Jayalakshmi; born : at Trichinopolly, Tamil Nadu, September 5, 1940; ed. at (i) E.R. High School, (ii) Jamal Mohammed College, Trichy, (iii) Pachayappa's College and (iv) Madras Law College, Madras; married to : Shrimati G. Karpagambigai, June 1, 1966; 1 son and 1 daughter

Advocate; Senior Legal Adviser, Corporation of Madras; Legal Adviser, (i) Tamil Nadu Slum Clearance Board. (ii) Tamil Nadu Handloom Development Corporation Ltd. and (iii) Tantea, Coonnor; strived hard for the growth of student wing of D.M.K. Party while studying in Jamal Mohammed College, 1955--59 and in Pachayappa's College, Madras; was imprisoned for more than Nineteen times for involvement in various agitations launched by D.M.K. party; was arrested under MISA and kept in the Madras Central Jail for more than a year during the Emergency; Advocate for D.M.K. Party; Chairman, Shobana Cultural Academy, Madras; conducted several blood donation camps; Secretary, (i) Students' Wing of D.M.K. while studying in Law College, Madras, (ii) Madras District Students, D.M.K. party and Students' Wing for five years and (iii) at present, State D.M.K. Volunteers' Wing; visited Moscow and Tashkent to participate in the Youth Festival; famous in conducting "Villupattu" programmes for the D.M.K. election campaign; was Member, (i) Tamil Nadu Legislative Council from 1984 to 1986 and (ii) Joint Parliamentary Committee on Science & Technology; Member, (i) D.M.K. from the beginning, (ii) Committees on Defence and Railways and (iii) Committee on Subordinate Legislation, Rajya Sabha; elected to the Rajya Sabha in April, 1990.

Favourite pastime and recreation: Reading novels and English magazines, keen interest in cricket, football and tennis.
