BHATIA, SHRI MADAN:
M.A. (English) Punjab University and M.A. (Cantab), Bar-at-Law; (Nominated) Cong. (I); son of late Shri Radha Kishen and late Shrimati Ram Piari; born : at Jhelum (now in Pakistan), August 21, 1929; ed. at (i) Government College, Lahore, (ii) Government College, Ludhiana and (iii) Cambridge University, Lincolon's Inn; married to : Shrimati Mohini Bhatia .
Lawyer; established 'Janata Vikas Kendra' in slum areas of Delhi and did social services in 1960's; argued the famous Maneka Gandhi's suit passport case in the Supreme Court which gave new dimension to the Constitution and the Law and Smt. Indira Gandhi's case in which she had challenged her prosecution by the Shah Commission; the prosecution was then quashed by the Delhi High Court; Trustee, Nehru Memorial Fund and Nehru Trust for Cambridge University; Chairman, All India Conference of Lawyers in October, 1980; Treasurer, Sanjay Memorial Trust; Member, (i) Committee on Subordinate Legislation, Rajya Sabha, 1983--85, (ii) Committee of Privileges, Rajya Sabha, 1984-85 and 1991- 92 and again since 6th June, 1994, (iii) Committee on Rules, Rajya Sabha 1986-87 and (iv) Standing Committee on Home Affairs; nominated to the Rajya Sabha in September, 1982, and re-nominated in November, 1988.
