Social worker; was President, (i) Kerala Students' Union, (ii) Kerala Pradesh Youth Congress and (iii) Kerala Pradesh Congress Committee thrice; General Secretary, A.I.C.C.(I); Member, (i) Kerala Legislative Assembly, 1970-- 77 and again from October, 1977 to November, 1979 and (ii) Congress Working Committee; Chief Minister of Kerala, 1977- 78; Union Minister for Civil Supplies, Consumer Affairs & Public Distribution since 17th January, 1993; elected to the Rajya Sabha in April, 1985 and re-elected in April, 1991.

Travels abroad: U.S.S.R., Japan, France, U.K. and Yugoslavia.

Publications: Managing Editor, (i) "Kalasala" and (ii) "Veekshanom Daily".
