Mechanical Engineer; associated with Congress and Youth Congress since 1972; President, Madhya Pradesh Youth Congress, 1984-85; General Secretary, (i) Madhya Pradesh Youth Congress (I), 1981-83, (ii) Madhya Pradesh Congress Committee and (iii) All India Youth Congress and Incharge, Development Centre,1985-88; was associated with various Parliamentary Committees viz., Information and Broadcasting, Science and Technology, Environment and Forests, Petroleum and Chemicals, Public Sector Undertakings and Home Affairs; Member, (i) All India Institute of Medical Sciences, (ii) House Committee, (iii) Committee on Agriculture, 1996-97, (iv) Committee on Home Affairs, (v) Consultative Committee for the Ministry of Home Affairs, 1991-97 and (vi) Consultative Committee for the Ministry of Defence; Union Minister of State for Defence Production and Supplies, 1995-96; elected to the Rajya Sabha in April, 1984, re-elected in April, 1990 and again in April, 1996.
