Secretary of educational institutions and Free Boarding Houses; started several Schools and Colleges; joined politics in 1952; associated with (i) Indian National Congress, 1952-77, (ii) Janata Party, 1977-79 and (iii) Congress (I) since 1980; represented the State in the Central Silk Board for about nine years; was Member, (i) Karnataka Legislative Assembly, 1952-78 and 1989-94, (ii) 7th Lok Sabha, 1980-84, (iii) Committee on Commerce, (iv) Committee on Energy, (v) Consultative Committee for the Ministry of Commerce and (vi) Consultative Committee for the Ministry of Finance; Member, (i) Advisory Council of Customs and Central Excise, (ii) Committee on Finance and (iii) Consultative Committee for the Ministry of Industry ; Minister holding different portfolios in the Government of Karnataka :(i) Industry and Information, 1968-71, (ii) Finance and Excise, 1989-90 and (iii) Revenue and Religious Endowments, 1992-93; Minister of Surface Transport (Independent Charge), Government of India, September, 1995 to June 1996; elected to the Rajya Sabha in April, 1994.
