Senior Advocate; involved in social work, slumclearance; currently teaching at the National Law School, Bangalore, and Professor Emeritus, Symbiosis College of Law, Poona; taught International Law briefly, Wayne State University in Detroit, Michigan(USA); appointed Vice-President, World Peace through Law Centre, 1973 and later became Honorary President, Australia Section; Chairman , Bar Council of India 1970; Member, (i) International Bar Association, 1966, (ii) Editorial Board of Lex et Juris and Frequent, (iii) Sixth and Seventh Lok Sabha, (iv) Committee on Subordinate Legislation, Rajya Sabha, 1994-96,

(iv) Committee on Transport and Tourism, 1993-96, (v) Committee on Home Affairs,1996-97 and (vi) Consultative Committee for the Ministry of External Affairs (till December,1997); Union Minister of Law, Justice and Company Affairs, 1996, Union Minister of Urban Affairs and Employment, since March 19, 1998; elected to the Rajya Sabha from Karnataka in April, 1988 and re-elected from Maharashtra in April, 1994.
