Bhendia and late Shrimati Ugiyar Bai; b. at Village Pipar Chhedi, Tehsil Balod; District Durg (M.P.), January 25, 1931; ed. at, (i) Primary School, Nipani, Durg and (ii) Morris College and (iii) Law College, Nagpur; m. Shrimati Saj Bhendia, May 1960; 3 s. and 2 d.

Advocate and Agriculturist (farming); worked for the welfare of Tribals; associated with Indian National Congress since 1960; Chairman, Indira Gandhi Rashtriya Manav Sangrahalaya, 1994-95; Member, (i) Legislative Assembly of Madhya Pradesh, 1962-84 & 1989-93 and (ii) Committee on Urban and Rural Development; was Cabinet Minister for three terms during the period 1962-93; elected to the Rajya Sabha in June, 1998.

Special interest : Welfare of weaker sections of the society.

Favourite pastime and recreation : Reading.
